3 slots available on my VPS Webhosting

If you’re navigating about my site and are thinking to yourself "Eeeee – this site’s reet nippy" – that’s because I have VPS hosting

"VP What?" I imagine you to say in my slightly warped head 🙂

    VPS = Virtual Private Server.

Most webhosting companies offer a shared hosting service where you have your websites on a machine alongside about 400-800 other people.
That’s a lot of stress for any machine and disks and why your online site may be dragging its heels.

2 other options hosting providers offer are:
    1) VPS Hosting
    2) Dedicated Hosting

    (1) Is what I have.
They cut one of those powerful servers into 10-20 and sell/rent then to individuals. The VPS acts like a complete server install so it looks like I have the whole machine to myself. I has it’s own CPU and reserved memory, so when I need some power – it’s instantly there.

The upside is I’m not sharing the main machine with many other people, so the site flies and delivers content much faster.
The downside is that it costs a lot more than regular shared hosting

    (2) Dedicated hosting is where you hire a complete server.
This costs thouuuusands every year and isn’t really a requirement until you head into the successful small-medium sized business with an online shopping cart or something like that.

So what’s the point of this blog?
I’ve helped out a couple of friends who were having problems with their shared hosting and they now have their sites running from my VPS server.

    Example websites hosted here:
    https://PMcGPhotography.com
    https://BelfastStudioRental.com
    https://IrishProductionServices.com
    https://www.Freedom2Breathe.co.uk

I have more space available and so I decided to invite 3 more people to share my VPS server.
I’ll be selective in who I choose as we’ll be all sharing my fast machine.

The 3 spaces I’m offering will each have:

    1) 1Gb of fast diskspace
    2) 25Gb bandwidth (unlimited in theory, but not in practice)
    3) 20 addon/parked domains
    4) 50 databases
    5) Unlimited email, ftp, subdomains …. etc
    6) Email capped at 2,500 /hour (share hosting is capped at 350/hr – not so good for mailing lists)
    6) Your own private cPanel interface to manage your sites

The cost …. £100 plus VAT per year.
It’s not as cheap as shared hosting, but it has the huge speed and performance a VPS server delivers.

Fast website = happy Google and visitors 🙂

If you think you’d rather your own VPS server then here’s an idea of costs:

CallumW.com has moved to the UK

I bought CallumW.com back in March 2000 – not realising then quite how integral it would become in my day-to-day and my identity (online).

10 years ago the internet was still relatively unused by the masses, but nowadays business are beginning to push their IT to internet outsourcing specialist companies via cloud computing thanks to internet speeds and cheaper storage.

Slightly unimaginable to the dial-up culture we had even just a few years ago.

The price of WebHosting has always been exponentially higher in the UK than the USA and so CallumW.com moved to live in a Data Center in Florida for 10 years, soaking up the sun, partying, trying to avoid ‘tropical’ computer viruses and hiding under the desks when hurricanes blew through.

But finally, the hosting company I’ve always used (and were always best value for money) have opened up a datacenter in the UK and have closed the gap in hosting fees. It’s still marginally less value than what you get in the USA, but it’s still more than I can use and as it’s so much faster being local in the UK, that’s good enough for me 🙂

So on the 28th of May, CallumW.com packed it’s bags, bought some woolly jumpers and on the 29th (circa 16:00) it came home and is now living in a plush brand new box in a secret location somewhere in London.

You may notice (if you’ve visited before) that the site is much more responsive now that it doesn’t have to travel 6,000 miles before splatting itself all over your screens …… [maybe I should rephrase that?]

Welcome home my wee site … Take your sandals off, I’ll get the kettle on 🙂

Why you should hire a photographer for your marketing material

I’ve seen a run of articles recently which re-enforce the value of working with a photographer to create an image and marketing material that’s right for you, rather than purchasing stock images, regardless of them being Rights Free (RF) or Rights Managed (RM).

What’s the difference between RF and RM?
Simply put, Rights Free means anyone can buy and use the same image concurrently. You could be sharing the same image for your Children’s Nursery service as another company selling Bondage Gear. You have zero control over it’s use.

Rights Managed usually means that you license the image for a specific use + time so that the same image may not be used in the same arena or publications during your purchased license term (the more it costs, the more exclusivity you have).
This gives you some control of who else uses that particular image, but there’s nothing stopping an almost identical image from the same set being used elsewhere as you only licensed one shot.

So … here are some examples of what happens when people try to save a few bucks on their overheads.

An example image of a call center person on a stock website

The same girl on the website of "a global business and IT consulting firm"

The same girl on a major UK Brand website:

And … oh dear! The same girl on an adult toy website
(clicking in this image reveals a clear image):

The above are examples of website use only, but it also extends to print too.
The next example was found and shared on the blog of Bobballs

Billboard Poster from The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP)
"The larger of the two main unionist political parties in Northern Ireland" (Wikipedia)

Within hours, someone from a rival party found the stock image source and used another image from the same set to completely discredit the DUP – and there’s nothing they could do about it …
(except work with a photographer in the first place)

While we may laugh at the above, the actual implications of these "shortcuts" for these companies, designers (and political parties) are extremely severe and embarrassing, not to mention potentially costing them revenue or credibility should both marketing campaigns be effective in the public eye.

The reality is that if you work with a photographer to make one picture, then yes this is going to cost more than a generic stock image.
But if you work with the photographer to make a series of images for you then it works out cheaper than stock pictures.

So the question is .. is your public image only worth £2?
